University is highly disorganised.

University is highly disorganised. I really don't recommend Messina to anyone who wants to have their medical education in a professional environment. So my rating is 1.

My rating is 1 out of 5.

Some professors are can't speak english very well. Most of the professors are don't come to the classes on time. Some slides are even in italian, not english. Most of them don't want to share slides with students. Even if they shared the slides, they are only useful for passing the exams. During 1st year only one lecturer was organised which is proffesor of molecular biology. The other lecturers are presenting their lectures in highly disorganised way. They don't give proper structure to students and everything is mess. Two professors from first year don't want us to attend exams because they believe that their subjects are really hard and no student should pass those exams during their first year.

City is really depressing.

Buildings are really old, streets are really dirty, you may easily feel like you are in the 3rd world country. There are a few good cafes and thats it. There are no good places to eat. Night life is really active but it is limited to 3 quality places. Monthly average is 700 euros for students and it is not that cheap if you consider to study in messina. Annual transportation fee is 30 euros and it is really great. During winter months it is 6 celcius at most but during summer time it is really hot. You should cook yourself because there are no quality food in Messina at all. My rating is 1.

The lunch and dinner provided by university is really bad not nutritious.

There are no cafes in the university area. Only vending machines !! The lunch and dinner provided by university is really bad not nutritious. The price range for meal is between free and 8 euros depending your financial situation. There is a gym but it is far away. There no active sport clubs. If you want to have proper gym and sport clubs you should go private places and pay for them. Main Library capacity is really limited to only 48 students, and you have to reserve your spot 3 days before !! And people reserve their seats in 10 minutes after midnight so if you want a spot in main library you have to be awake midnight. Main library is open from 8:30 to midnight. Medicine library is only available during weekdays and available between 8:30 to 18:30. My rating is 1.

Review from: Scholarships category
Barely any options

Erasmus is kind of available but if you have that chance without giving your exams on time(which is impossible) it is not useful. Scholarships part is also not that good. It is only possible for first 2 years, next years they want you to have really high number of credits to have scholarship and it is also highly not possible. There is only one organisation which gives the scholarship and that is it.

really hard to find good flats and rooms

When I came here I stayed in couple of different places until i find my current house and it took at least 2 months. Price for a flat is around 500 - 1000 euros. Renting a room is around 250 euros. It is really hard to find good flats and rooms because everything is old and dirty in the city.

there was one of our teachers this year who did not speak English.

there was one of our teachers this year who did not speak English. Our course materials are very inadequate, there is no laboratory support, and when we told our professors, they said we cannot provide it. Since it is a newly opened English medical education, there are great problems with the organization, the classes are canceled or they come to the class for the last 30 minutes, take attendance and leave.

Some of our professors, 2 out of 6 professors, don't speak English at all, you heard it right, they can't speak. Another professor speaks quietly because her English is bad So the people in the back can't hear. As for the slides, the situation is the same, there are slides in Italian.

some proffs has really huge EGO

My point is 2 ,after the regular exam calls, you can take exams like May, September, November in the intermediate seasons, which is very useful for recover the remaining exams. You have the unlimited right to take exams. But for the first year students will face unusual situation which is some professor will say that ''how you can take exam you are 1st year med students we finished our topics 1 month ago ''. I mean some proffs has really huge EGO.

There are classes from 8.30 in the morning to 5 in the evening.

Timetable is seriously busy, you have very limited time to study during the week. The first 2 years in Messina are seriously difficult, the teachers are pushing you on purpose, but after the 2nd grade, I can tell you that even if you do not go to school for 3 months, you do not encounter any problems. We heard from our friends about trainer classes that the professors say that they should come to the first 2 or 3 trainers and not come later and sign their signature, in fact, very comfortable and relaxed training awaits you :)

The people know very little English

This town is really affordable, friends, you can live for a price of 600 euros per month, the room rents start from 200 euros, you can easily find it. The people know very little English, but they really like foreigners, there is no security problem. The reason I say the town is seriously small and there are 3 nightclubs in total, the nightclubs are not bad, usually Erasmus parties are preferred. There is a techno party on Friday evening. After 1 month, you know everyone because there is a possibility to see that person 5-6 times during the day.
Public transport is free or you can pay 30 euros for 1 year ,

The food is decent

The food is decent and not bad and 1.6 euro. You need to make a reservation 3-4 days in advance for the gym. Price of gym is 10 euro per month. Private gym is 50 euro per month.Another bad thing is that we have been waiting for about 4 months to open a chess club, frankly, I think this is enough to tell you the situation.

I stay in a good location and pay 500 euros for a 3+1 house.

Apartments are generally old but there are good ones as well, and prices vary. You can find a sea view room for 200 euros, a 15-minute walk from the center.Messina is the best place to stay while studying medicine in Italy, considering the economic conditions and this is your first priority, messina is clearly ahead.

I definitely don’t recommend this school

Firstly you shouldn’t have high expectations. Some professors’ english level is very low so sometimes they can’t understand you when you asked something. Some professors are very useIess. For example in first semester one professor didn’t come %70 of her lessons. Some professor’s presentations are pretty good but some of them’s presentations are not good.

Most of the professors definitely are not fair at the exam.

All exams are oral in this school (even chemistry) so your exams depends the mood of the professor. For example you came to exam well prepared but professor that day wasn’t happy probably you will not pass the exam. Level of exams are much harder compared to other italian medicine schools.

Timetable is very busy

there are 3 lessons everyday each one is 2.5 hours (8:30-17:00) and also you need to study at home so that makes you very tired. If your attendance is lower than %75 for each lesson you will have to be repeat one year. So I mean school is very strict and tiring especially first year but after the first year it becomes a bit easier. However,

There were no lab classes

There were no lab classes, especially in the first year, despite having had a lot of clinical training at other medical schools. Definitely not a suitable place for someone who wants to improve themself clinically. The hospital is extremely inadequate in terms of equipment and quality.

The city is quite small

life is quite cheap compared to other cities. 300 euros is quite enough for living expenses except accomodation expense. Since the city is very small, everywhere is within walking distance. However, there are trains and buses for public transportation, but they often do not arrive on time.

The school has a canteen with lunch

the prices are quite cheap and the portions are sufficient. You can sign up for gyms for 30-50 euros per month. Libraries are overcrowded and useless.

the granting institution has financial difficulties.

If you have enough ECTS, you can do Erasmus. However, if you are dreaming of getting a scholarship here, you are in the wrong place because there is a possibility that you will not be able to receive a scholarship even when you are entitled to a scholarship because the granting institution has financial difficulties.

Quite cheap compared to other cities

Accommodation is quite cheap compared to other cities, but the houses are often very old, so you are likely to encounter bugs in the summer months. A room 250 euro + bills.

The university achieved high levels of education and boasted prominent professors in the fields of science, medicine, law, and philosophy, including Francesco Maurolico, Marcello Malpighi, and Giovanni Alfonso Borelli. However, the university was closed in 1678 due to political unrest and was later reopened several times.

In 1908, a devastating earthquake destroyed many of the university’s facilities, and 14 lecturers died under the ruins. Despite the difficult conditions, the university restarted its activities, and by the 1911-1912 academic year, there were 190 enrolled students attending the Faculty of Law and 29 attending the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy.

The Faculty of Sciences, Pharmacy, and Medicine reopened in 1914/1915, but due to the earthquake’s destruction, the clinics had a temporary location in the Civil Hospital. The university regained its dynamism by 1919-1920, with a total of 1,221 students, including those from other Sicilian provinces and Calabria.

Throughout its history, the University of Messina has been a hub of medical education and research, boasting prominent professors and world-renowned research facilities. Despite facing numerous challenges and setbacks, the university has persevered and continues to be a leading institution in the field of medicine.

Grocery stores and markets are widely available, and students can expect to pay around 30-50 EUR per week for groceries, depending on their eating habits.

Transportation costs in Messina are relatively affordable. Students can use public transportation, such as buses and trains, to get around the city and surrounding areas. Monthly passes for public transportation can cost around 30-40 EUR per month, while individual tickets cost approximately 1.5 EUR.
